Call for papers

Genome Informatics Workshop (GIW) was first held in Tokyo during December 3-4, 1990. It is the longest running international bioinformatics conference, which has provided unique opportunities that bridge theory and experiments, academia and industry, and East and West.

The 30th International Conference on Genome Informatics (GIW 2019) will be held at University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia on December 9-11, 2019. This year's conference will be jointly held with the Australian Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Society (ABACBS) Annual Conference.

For this joint conference, we solicit submission of full-length original research manuscripts for consideration of oral presentation (following the tradition of GIW), and abstracts for consideration of oral or poster presentation (following the tradition of ABACBS). The deadline for submission of full-length manuscript is 14 June 2019 28 June 2019 (see Important dates for details). The deadline for submission of abstracts will be announced soon (please keep an eye on the Call for highlight talks and posters page).

For full-length papers, we welcome submission of manuscripts that report original research, methodology, or software for consideration of oral presentation at the GIW/ABACBS 2019. Accepted papers will also be published in a special proceedings issue in one of our partnering journals (subject to final approval by the editors of the respective journal): BMC GenomicsBMC BioinformaticsBMC Medical Genetics, and Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

Submission is now open! Please read the rest of this page for instruction of submission targeting BMC journals or JBCB.

Your manuscript should present original contribution to all areas that are broadly related to bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, metagenomics, precision medicine and systems biology. Some key themes of this year's conference include (but not limited to):

  • Genomics and integrative analytics

  • Precision medicine

  • Single cell analytics

  • Non-human, agricultural, environmental and microbial genomics

  • Proteomics and metabolomics

  • Methods development and reproducibility research

Please prepare your manuscript using the template of the journal whose themes are closest to your submission.

Full-length papers submitted to GIW/ABACBS 2019 must not have been previously published (except for posting in public preprint archive) and must not be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

At least one of the authors of each accepted paper is required to present the paper at the conference, and must register and pay to attend the conference.

Important dates (tentative):
  • Deadline for full paper submission: 14 June 2019 28 June 2019
  • Initial notification of full paper acceptance: 9 August 2019 16 August 2019
  • Final notification of full paper acceptance: 20 September 2019

Submission to BMC journals

Authors who intend to submit a manuscript for one of the partnering BMC journals (BMC Genomics, BMC Bioinformatics and BMC Medical Genetics) should prepare their manuscript in accordance to the target journal’s general requirement. Nonetheless, no strict page limit or formatting requirement is enforced in the initial submission. When everything is ready, please submit your manuscript online via BMC’s Editorial Manager system: https://www.editorialmanager.com/supp/.

Please follow the following steps:

  1. Go to https://www.editorialmanager.com/supp/ and register for an account.

  2. Once you can log into the system, select ‘Submit New Manuscript’

  3. Under ‘Select Article Type’, please select ‘BMC Supplements Reviewed’

  4. Upload your manuscript file (compulsory) and optionally figures, tables, and supplementary files here.

  5. Under the ‘Review Preferences’ section, please list any reviewers whom you strongly wish to exclude from the list of potential peer reviewers. In GIW/ABACBS 2019, reviewers will be mostly selected from the members of the full-paper program committee (PC). Please also declare any PC/organising members whom you have a strong conflict of interest, such as colleagues in the same institution, currently/recent collaborators, current/recent mentors, competitors, etc.

  6. Under the ‘Additional Information’ section, please type in a brief ‘covering letter’ stating the key points of your paper, and also indicate which BMC journal(s) do you want your paper to be included in. In the question, ‘Please select the name of the Supplement you are submitting to from the below list’, please make sure you select ‘Proceedings of the Joint International GIW & ABACBS-2019 Conference’.

  7. You should be ready to ‘Build PDF for Approval’ after filling in all the relevant data under the ‘Manuscript Data’ section. Your paper can be submitted after you have confirmed that the PDF is a faithful representation of your manuscript.

It is important to note that the authors of a manuscript accepted to one of the BMC journals are responsible for the associated Open Access fee. The GIW/ABACBS organising committee has negotiated a significant discount compared to the regular open access fee of these journals.

Submission to JBCB

Authors who intend to submit a manuscript for the Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (JBCB) should prepare their manuscript in accordance to the journal’s general requirement. When everything is ready, please submit your manuscript via easychair:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=giw2019

Please log into the system, and provide all the necessary information about the submission. Please submit one manuscript PDF file including all figures, table and supplementary material (if any). Each paper should generally be within 8-15 pages in length, including figures, tables, references and supplementary materials (if any). Nonetheless, no strict page limit or formatting requirement is enforced in the initial submission.
