Brief position description:
This role will mainly contribute to Sydney Brain Tumour Program’s establishment of Nanopore sequencing-based diagnostics. Working with the Molecular Neuropathology service at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the brain cancer research team at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, the Brain Cancer Molecular Scientist will be pivotal in establishing bioinformatics pipelines for brain tumour diagnostics, and optimising wet laboratory protocols for Nanopore sequencing. Other duties may include experimental analyses, data collection, statistics, research paper preparation and other general laboratory support
Key Responsibilities
Establish a diagnostic pipeline for Nanopore sequencing-based brain tumour diagnostics
Establish protocols to ensure consistent and accurate application of diagnostic pipeline
Work with key players in establishing and implementing pipeline
Research contributions
To be successful in this role you will need:
-Bachelor or higher degree in Science/Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
-Collegial approach displaying well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
-Demonstrated experience in bioinformatics, with particular focus on long-read sequencing data handling, processing and analysis
-Well-grounded experience in DNA extraction, library preparation and other molecular techniques
-Demonstrated track record of working in a team with flexibility and respect. Experience in knowing when to seek advice from more senior colleagues.
-Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and manage competing priorities to meet deadlines and having the capacity to deliver results within specified timeframes.
-Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a genetic laboratory environment
-Sound understanding of accreditation and quality assurance requirements that impact the laboratory environment including WHS and privacy requirements
-Compliance with Category A immunization requirements
Desirable:
-Prior experience in a NATA-accredited molecular testing laboratory
-Prior experience in data analysis using multiple analytic platforms
-Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques, including ability to work with and integrate a variety of data types
