Interested in studying functional genomics and using the latest methods in synthetic biology?

The One Health Research Group at the University of Melbourne is recruiting PhD students to investigate advantageous genetic traits against the disease chytridiomycosis and develop synthetic biology methods to increase disease resistance in declining frog species, and/or decrease virulence in the fungus. Our research includes a Genome Wide Association Study and developing RNA interference approaches.

The projects are funded through the Australian Research Council, and PhD scholars will be advised by Drs Lee Skerratt, Tiffany Kosch, Lee Berger and members of the One Health Research Group and collaborators including Zoos Victoria. The project will be based at the Melbourne Veterinary School at the Werribee campus.

Emerging infectious diseases are a major threat to ecosystems and new methods are needed to fight them. Chytridiomycosis is the most devastating disease of vertebrates, causing population declines in over 500 amphibian species worldwide. The project is focused on improving disease resilience in ecosystems using genetic approaches, but the specific aims of the PhD research can be determined by the student. The expected outcomes of the project are improved understanding and increased immunity of frogs to chytridiomycosis and restoration of frogs into the environment.

Expertise needed: Ideal applicants will have experience with molecular biological or biomedical research such as molecular and synthetic biology, microbiology, computational biology, animal breeding, genetics, or immunology. Skills or interest in genomics, population genetics, conservation genetics, disease ecology, HPC computing, statistical analyses, and animal husbandry are an advantage.
Scholarship applications are competitive – applicants must have first-class Honours, Master’s by research (1 year full-time) or equivalent and an excellent academic record. Peer reviewed publications are beneficial. Post Graduate Research Scholarships for stipends are available through University of Melbourne, for which the applicant will need to apply separately by the 30st of April.

About the position

The Phipson lab works on both novel bioinformatics methods development and collaborative analysis projects with scientists within and external to the Institute. The role of the Research Officer is to work on statistical bioinformatics methods development and analysis from data generated from cutting-edge technologies including single cell assays. Specific projects may involve single cell transcriptomics, single cell ATAC-seq, spatial transcriptomics and single cell multi-omics. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct bioinformatics analyses, to develop bioinformatics methodology as appropriate and to work closely with collaborators in a multi-disciplinary team.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate will have a doctoral qualification or equivalent in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, computational biology or computer science. The candidate should have the ability to apply mathematical, statistical and computational principles to genomic problems. Experience with data analysis, programming and large datasets would be an advantage as would experience in R, Python, Unix and software development. Prior experience in bioinformatics and medical research would be an advantage but is not required. The candidate will be expected to have excellent organizational and time management skills, and a high level of interpersonal skills. Terms of appointment

This position is available for 2 years in a full time capacity. Consideration will be given for suitable applicants looking for a part-time position. Salary is Academic Level A6 – A8 (AUD $91,404 – $98,111). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.

About the Role
The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) is internationally renowned for its cutting-edge studies of infectious diseases and immunity, as highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. To support ongoing and new research activities at the Doherty Institute, a new Computational Sciences Initiative has been formed. This is to provide new resources for computational and data sciences, incorporating bioinformatics, biostatistics, infectious disease modelling and artificial intelligence.

As part of the Institute’s Computational Sciences Initiative, a Research Fellow is required to drive computational and statistical analysis of multi-omics datasets, applied to the areas of infectious diseases and immunology. The candidate will be self-motivated and develop a strong program of collaborative projects with other researchers in the Doherty Institute. This is anticipated to generate substantial new scientific discovery in areas spanning Immunology and Microbiology pursued in the institute.  It will also facilitate the development of novel approaches in bioinformatics, particularly in the application of mathematical and computational techniques to analyse data from new and emerging ‘omic’ technologies, including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. About You

  • PhD in bioinformatics, statistivs, computer science or a related field

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate across teams and disciplines (biology and computer science), work as a member of a research team, and interact in a courteous, collaborative and effective manner with academic, administrative and support staff

  • Experience in running bioinformatics workflows on high-performance computing clusters

  • Experience in analysis of high-dimensional datasets, ideally those arising from high-throughput molecular assays

  • Strong organisation skills and accurate recording and analysis of data generated from research undertaken

  • Demonstrated experience in using initiative, working with minimal supervision and ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated by presentation of research results at internal forums, conferences, and through manuscript submissions, inclusive of manuscripts posted to preprint servers
