Brief position description: The laboratories of Dr Anthony Bosco and Dr Parwinder Kaur have a joint opening for a postdoctoral position in computational systems biology. The position is part of a larger effort to establish a competitive personalised medicine program at the Telethon Kids Institute.

The postdoc will be involved in developing and applying state of the art computational approaches for genomic data analysis, data integration, network inference, and personalised risk stratification. A strong focus of the position will be to identify the molecular states that underpin phenotypic states, and make predictions about actionable possibilities to push biological systems between opposing molecular states in a directed manner. A broad range of genomic data sets will be available for analysis, including Hi-C, whole genomic sequencing, whole exome sequencing, epigenetic profiles, transcriptomics, single cell transcriptomics, metabolomics, and microbiome data. Data will be generated from diverse experimental settings, including experimental human, mouse, and rat models, birth cohort studies, human clinical trials, and experimental perturbations. The position represents an exciting opportunity to work at the crossroads between basic science and clinical practice. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary team comprised of biologists, molecular biologists, clinicians, statisticians, mathematicians, and computational biologists. A post-doctoral research position is available in the ProCan Cancer Data Science Group, led by Dr. Qing Zhong. ProCan (the ACRF International Centre for the Proteome of Human Cancer) is a world-first initiative developed and launched in September 2016 by Professors Phil Robinson and Roger Reddel, and established with a $10 million grant from the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). Equipped with six SCIEX mass spectrometers and a super computer (800TB / 480 cores), ProCan processes tumour samples through a proteomic method, SWATH-MS, which allows fast mass spectrometric conversion of small amounts of tissue (biopsy level) into a single, permanent digital file representing the quantitative proteome of the sample. One of the goals of ProCan is to measure thousands of proteins in about 70,000 cancers of all types with known treatment outcome and correlate tumour proteotypes with clinical phenotypes. The Cancer Data Science Group aims to develop novel computational tools and sophisticated machine learning algorithms to achieve this goal. Other major focuses of the group are 1) big proteogenomic data mining and management, 2) the genome-proteome association analysis and multi-omic data integration for studying cancer, 3) development of advanced statistical tools to account for batch effects caused by large-scale, high throughput proteomics, and 4) implementation of big data-driven, evidence-based computational tools to achieve predictive, preventive, personalized medicine.

We invite applications from PhD – MD/PhD scientists to join our group. Applicants should have a high degree of motivation in academic research, an excellent record of scientific accomplishments with publications in peer-reviewed journals, and the ability to work independently with outstanding communication and writing skills. Candidates should also have a strong background in computer science and/or mathematics and be interested in cancer-related proteomics or systems biology. Knowledge in bioinformatics, machine learning and high-throughput big data analysis/ visualization is essential. Strong programming skills in R, Python or Matlab are required. Previous experience in proteomics would be helpful, but not essential.

Brief position description: The RAre DIsease Oncogenomics (RADIO) Laboratory with the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research (UMCCR) is dedicated to translational research of rare and orphan cancers. We are currently seeking an experienced and highly motivated junior post-doctoral bioinformatics researcher who will contribute to a new and exciting research study involving deep genomic analysis of neuroendocrine tumours (NET). NET is a rare but heterogeneous collection of tumours with a complex genetic makeup that often display unpredictable clinical behavior. We aim to identify the genetic determinants of NET tumours including those originating from sympathetic endocrine tissues such as the adrenal gland and extra-adrenal paraganglia. Our goal is to find genetic associations with clinical outcome, response to therapy and functional imaging properties and to translate these finding to improve patient care and outcome. The research will include high-level and integrated bioinformatic analysis of a large series of tumour samples collected through an international network (American Australian Asian Adrenal Alliance, A5) involving whole genome DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing and DNA methylation analysis. The candidate will work closely with a team of biologists and bioinformatics staff of the UMCCR at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
